If you are familiar with Trade the Markets or Simpler Options and trader John Carter, you have probably heard of Voodoo Lines − a chart indicator which uses Elliot Wave and Fibonacci calculations to generate support and resistance lines. These lines seem to work like magic; consistently, though not perfectly, defining support and resistance the markets respect.
Voodoo Lines were originally called FibGrid. The original developers at one point published a video, which we have a copy of, that explained the theory behind FibGrid lines. They released it into the public domain, giving everyone permission to develop indicators using the theory. We used this information to develop our own version of the indicator, which we call FibFractals.
The theory behind this indicator, made plain by the video, is very simple:
1. Identify the low and high of a major first wave of a move (Elliot Wave 1). The space between these lines is region 1.
2. Plot the 61.8 extension region 1 (width of region 1 times 0.618). Plot it above region 1. The space between the high of region 1 and this 61.8 extension is region 2.
3. Plot the 1.618 extension of region 2 (the width of region 2 times 1.618). This space is region 3.
4. For each subsequent region high, plot the 1.618 extension of the region below it.
5. You can add as many regions as you want. FibGrid/Voodoo Lines, however, only plotted four regions. FibFractals plots six regions.
6. These lines are the level one lines, called "fire lines" in Voodoo Lines and usually colored red.
7. Now draw the .382 and the .618 lines between each adjacent line. These are the level 2 lines, called "tree lines" in Voodoo Lines and usually colored green.
8. Now draw the .382 and the .618 lines between each adjacent pair of level 1 and 2 lines. These are the level 3 lines, called "snow lines" in Voodoo Lines and usually colored purple.
9. You can continue to draw .382 and .618 lines between each adjacent line as deeply as you want, or until your screen goes white with color. FibFractals plots up to five levels deep.
