«2024 Paris Olympics: Novak vs Ebden, potential R2 with Nadal

The draw for the Paris Olympic tennis tournament (July 27 to August 4, 2024) has been made on Thursday.

World no.2 Novak Djokovic is seeking his first ever gold medal in what will be his fifth appearance at the Games after 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020.

The 37-year-old Serbian star was a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In London 2012, he fell in the bronze medal match to Juan Martin del Potro, who also beat him in the first round of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Novak in a bronze medal match at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympics.

Djokovic is a top seed (Sinner withdrew) and will open his campaign against Matthew Ebden (AUS). It will be their first career meeting.

Novak’s possible rivals in the later stages of the tournament are:

World no.2 Novak Djokovic defeated Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-2 to reach the final at the Paris Olympics.

The Serbian star produced a high-quality display on Court Philippe Chatrier, the same stadium where he won Roland Garros in 2016, 2021 and 2023.

The Belgrade native earned a decisive break at 5-4 in the first set to grab a lead. The two had traded breaks twice in the second set, before Novak found his rhythm and broke twice more to seal the win.

Djokovic is guaranteed career-best Olympic result. His previous best Olympics result was a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing games.

“I have been waiting for this for almost 20 years,” Nole said. “I’ve played four Olympic games, this is my fifth and I’ve never passed semi-finals. I lost three semi-finals in my first four Olympic games. I managed to overcome this big hurdle. I must be honest and say that I was thinking about all the semi-finals that I lost. I played against a player who is in great form and really came out firing from both ends. I just tried to maintain the focus and do what I have to do.”

Match statistics: aces (3-0), double faults (1-2), winners (18-12), unforced errors (23-27), total points won (68-52).

Novak will clash against Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s showdown for gold.

Novak Djokovic beat Carlos Alcaraz in thrilling fashion to secure a long-awaited Olympic title and complete the career 'Golden Slam'.

Djokovic, who has won a men's record 24 majors and swept up every title there is in tennis, finally clinched Olympic gold at his fifth Games.

The Serb put in his best performance of the year to beat French Open and Wimbledon champion Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) in front of a packed crowd in Paris.

He is just the fifth player to win the 'Golden Slam' in singles - all four majors and the Olympic title - after Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf.

Djokovic left this same court at Roland Garros two months ago needing knee surgery, putting his Olympic dreams at risk, and his reaction after Sunday's win showed what it meant.

He turned towards his box, arms outstretched in disbelief, before throwing his racquet to the floor.

After a warm embrace with Alcaraz, Djokovic immediately burst into tears and fell to his knees on the middle of the court.

He then unfurled a Serbian flag and clambered into the stands to celebrate with his family and support team.

«Novak Đoković nastavlja da piše istoriju svetskog tenisa!

Najbolji teniser svih vremena dobio je najvažniji meč u karijeri koji mu je doneo jedino što mu je nedostajalo – ZLATO za Srbiju na Olimpijskim igrama!

U epskom meču odluke na olimpijskom turniru u Parizu Novak, najstariji finalista i šampion (37) u istoriji, savladao je Karlosa Alkaraza, najmlađeg finalistu (21), rezultatom 7:6 (7:3), 7:6 (7:2).

Finalni spektakl na pariskoj šljaci trajao je dva časa i 50 minuta, a Novak je došao do još jednog rekorda – karijernog super slema, odnosno uspeo je da osvoji sva četiri gren slema, Završni masters i zlato na Olimpijadi. Prethodno je to pošlo za rukom jedino Andre Agasiju.

Prvi set dvojice titana bio je za teniske anale. Igra koju su pokazali Novak i Alkaraz ne može se okarakterisati ovozemaljskom. Najpre je srpski teniser imao jednu brejk loptu u drugom gemu, zatim tri vezane u četvrtom. Alkaraz je sve spasao i sada on u nastavku preuzima brejk šanse. Novak je u petom gemu neutralisao tri, a nešto kasnije u maratonskom devetom čak pet. Imao je Srbin jednu brejk-set loptu pri vođstvu od 6:5, ali se Alkaraz izvukao i izborio taj-brejk. Nestvaran tenis nastavio se i u ovom delu igre. Sve do 3:3 igrači su bili ravnopravni, a onda je po promeni strana Novak preuzeo kontrolu u svoje ruke, vezao četiri „strašna“ poena i posle jednog časa i 33 minuta borbe došao do prvog seta.

I pored velikog pritiska nivo tenisa u drugom setu nije opadao. Novakov forhend bio je fantastičan. Igrači su čvršće čuvali svoj servis, a jedinu brejk loptu imao je Novak u trećem gemu, koju je Alkaraz spasao. Obojica tenisera pružili su svoje najbolje izdanje, ali na tronu može biti samo jedan. Novak na fantastičan način osvaja taj-brejk sa nekoliko „ludačkih“ poena i stiže do nečega za šta je ostavio telo, svu snagu, srce, dušu i život na terenu!
