Almond Board of Australia chairman Neale Bennett said growers were feeling strong and prices had firmed during the past few months.
There are fears for the US almond crop because of the severe drought in California.
“This could push Australian prices up,” Mr Bennett said.
“But if our price gets too high we get swapped out for other nuts like walnuts and pistachios. That’s what happened a few years ago when we got to $9 a kilogram.”
The US will harvest in August-September, with the next announcement in May and another before harvest.
“They’re still forecasting at this stage and could forecast a good or bad bloom,” Mr Bennett said. “At this stage they’re still forecasting a two billion pound (907,185 tonne) crop, which is pretty normal.
“But that could end up finishing differently because of the lack of water. The drought in really hitting pretty hard.”
In Sunraysia it’s been a good season.
“Most people are happy,” Mr Bennett said. “This year’s crop is about 10-15 per cent down, but the industry is still aiming for the 80,000 tonnes of production it predicted at the start of the season.
“We got 77,000 tonnes last year and yields are increasing every year as our trees mature.
“The big news is that we have passed the $300 million worth of exports just recently and if things start off where we think they will we’ll hit $475 million next season.”
Sunraysia has about 23 growers — 20 small, independent ones, as well as big companies Olam, Select Harvests and Macquarie Almonds.
The area grows about 65 per cent of the Australian almond crop.
The recent rain shouldn’t be a problem for those still harvesting, Mr Bennett said.
